🛡️ Getting Started: Security First
Before installing anything, it is vital to understand the security model of a self-custody wallet. Lace is non-custodial, meaning you alone control your assets. The single most important piece of information you will generate is your recovery phrase (a sequence of 12, 15, or 24 words). This phrase is the master key to your funds.- Write it down physically: Use paper and store it in a secure, offline location. Never store it digitally (screenshots, text files, cloud notes) or share it with anyone, ever.
- Official source only: Install the extension exclusively from the official links provided on lace.io. Avoid downloading from search engine ads or forums.
💻 Installation and Initial Setup
Lace is primarily a browser extension wallet, currently available for Chromium-based browsers like Google Chrome, Brave, and Microsoft Edge.- Install the Extension: Navigate to the official website (lace.io) and follow the link to the Chrome Web Store (or Edge Add-ons). Click “Add to Chrome” and confirm the installation. It is recommended to pin the extension to your toolbar for easy access.
- Create a New Wallet: Open the Lace extension and select the option to create a new wallet.
- Set a Strong Password: You will be prompted to create a password. This password encrypts the wallet data locally on your device; it does not directly protect your blockchain assets. Use a strong, unique password (typically a minimum of 10-12 characters with mixed cases, numbers, and symbols) to prevent unauthorized local access.
- Secure Your Recovery Phrase: The wallet will generate your recovery phrase. Write these words down in the exact order on paper. Lace supports 12, 15, and 24-word phrases depending on the wallet type. Confirm the phrase to complete the setup.
⚙️ Key Features and Configuration
Once your wallet is set up, you can explore its core functionalities.- Managing Assets: Lace supports Cardano native assets (ADA, tokens, and NFTs). You can view your balances and send/receive assets directly from the interface. The wallet also supports hardware wallets like Ledger (Nano X, Nano S, Nano S Plus) for enhanced security.
- Staking (Delegation): You can delegate your ADA to stake pools to earn rewards. Lace allows you to choose a stake pool based on parameters like saturation, cost, and margin. A standout feature is multi-staking, which allows you to delegate to up to ten pools simultaneously, helping to diversify your staking strategy and support network decentralization.
- DApp Connectivity: Lace acts as a gateway to Web3. You can connect it to supported decentralized applications (DApps) on Cardano and Midnight. The wallet injects the necessary APIs for DApps to request transactions or signatures.
- Network Selection: You can switch between the Cardano Mainnet and test networks (like Preview or Preprod) from within the wallet settings, which is useful for developers or users who want to test features without spending real assets.
💡 Important Considerations
- No “Unstaking” Required: When you delegate ADA, your funds are not locked. They remain in your wallet and are spendable at any time. There is no need to “unstake” to access your funds; you simply stop earning rewards if you move your ADA or re-delegate.
- Beta Features: Some features, like Shared Wallets (multi-signature), may be in beta. These are typically available on test networks first and require opting into a beta program within the wallet settings.
- Support Channels: If you need help, use the official support links found on lace.io. Do not rely on direct messages from strangers offering assistance, as these are common vectors for scams.
